Code of Ethics
Members of the Texas Coalition of Forensic Nurses are united by a shared commitment to compassionate, ethical, and evidence-informed forensic nursing practice. TCFN's work is organized around three pillars: Care, Equity and Justice, and Professional Community. Through membership in the Coalition, individuals and organizations affirm their commitment to TCFN's mission, vision, and core values, and agree to uphold this Code of Ethics.
Pillar 1: Care
1. Survivor-Centered and Whole Person Care We prioritize the dignity, safety, autonomy, and well-being of every person affected by violence. We approach this work with compassion, respect, and presence across the physical, emotional, cultural, and social dimensions of a person's experience.
2. Evidence-Based Practice and Lifelong Learning We advance forensic nursing through evidence-based practice, clinical excellence, and continuous learning. We contribute to a culture of inquiry and professional growth that produces better outcomes for the people and communities we serve.¹
3. Ethical Accountability and Professional Integrity We conduct ourselves with honesty, integrity, and professionalism in all professional interactions. We protect the confidentiality of patients and cases in all clinical, educational, and community contexts and uphold the trust placed in forensic nurses by patients, colleagues, and communities.
Pillar Two: Equity and Justice
4. Inclusivity, Equity, and Advocacy We foster forensic nursing education, practice, and leadership that is inclusive, accessible, and equitable for diverse communities across Texas. We advocate for policies, systems, and resources that promote justice, accountability, and equitable access to forensic healthcare for people affected by violence.
Pillar Three: Professional Community
5. Collaboration, Engagement, and Public Representation We believe effective responses to violence require collaboration across healthcare, advocacy, legal systems, and community organizations. Within the Coalition, we engage with one another with professionalism and mutual respect, and we represent TCFN publicly in ways that reflect its values and uphold the dignity of the profession.
6. Personal and Professional Well-Being We recognize that forensic nursing carries significant emotional and psychological weight. We commit to practices that support our own well-being and that of our colleagues, knowing that caring for ourselves strengthens our ability to show up fully for this work.
7. Professional Growth and Leadership We support the sustainability of the forensic nursing workforce through mentorship, education, and leadership development. We cultivate a community where nurses can deepen their skills, take on leadership, and contribute to the future of the field.
